​Water Operator Trainee

JOB TITLE: Water Operator Trainee
SALARY RANGE:  Hourly
TYPICAL DUTIES: Under general supervision will be training to be a Water Operator I, to participate in the operation, maintenance and construction of a domestic water system.  Performs basic electrical, mechanical and hydraulic troubleshooting and repairs as required.  Perform Standby duties on a scheduled basis.  Operates equipment including, but not limited to; pipe tapping and threading machines, pneumatic jackhammer and compactor, single axle dump truck.  Operators must also assist in the treatment of drinking water. Assist and perform operation checks of treatment plant equipment such as pumping systems and chemical feeders. Load and unload chemicals such as chlorine cylinders. Monitor the status of plant operating guidelines, such as flows, pressure, chemical feeds, levels, and water quality indicators. With supervision make arithmetic calculations to determine chemical feed rates, flow quantities, detention and contact times, monitor the effectiveness of filter media and perform routine backwashes. Other duties as required.

 EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:
Possession of:a valid and appropriate California Driver’s License, may be required to possess a Hazardous Materials endorsement.
certification as a Water Treatment Operator, Grade I, issued by the State Water Resources Control Board within one year of hire.
certification as a Water Distribution Operator, Grade I, issued by the State Water Resources Control Board within one year of hire or promotion to Water Operator I.
High School Diploma (including GED).
Knowledge of:basic methods of maintenance, operation and repair of mechanical and hydraulic systems
safe and efficient operation of construction equipment.
customer service practices, including meter reading.
Ability to:participate in all phases of field work.
accomplish assigned tasks in an efficient and timely manner.
accomplish maintenance and operational work orders.
properly document computer generated service orders.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination of training and experience providing the requisite knowledge will be acknowledged.  Typical training includes courses in basic mathematics, biology and chemistry.  Typical experience will be acquired by employment in the general workforce with emphasis upon activities similar to waterworks.
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS: A Water Operators will be physically active; able to lift heavy objects (up to 75 lbs.) safely; understand, follow and carry out general instructions; demonstrate the necessary vocational aptitude to accomplish basic waterworks maintenance, operations and construction activities; be capable of comprehending and writing our reports; understand and observe safe work practices; advise management of any and all situations which might jeopardize Company holding with relationship to property (including any and all equipment) and/or pending litigation; and work harmoniously with others.
THIS IS A SAFETY SENSITIVE POSITION.  This position is such that the employee may be required to respond in emergency situations, assist fire department and polices to assure the safety of the community in the event of a natural or manmade disaster.  Also in the event that company polices and/or state requirements change employee may be required to wear or use a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and the employee will be prohibited from wearing facial hair in a manner that may interfere with the proper use of SCBA equipment.agraph here.
